This is what I discovered when I started to look more closely into newspaper and magazine Press-Ads. I'm taking about the small classified or box ads, not the great big glossy ads posted by car and fashion companies.

Tiny little Press Ads can generate huge sums of money for the advertiser.

Tiny little Press Ads like the one on the left can generate huge sums of money for the advertiser. Year after year I had been looking at these tiny Ads and it always puzzled me what they were all about.

Take the one on the left for example which I have 'blown up' below:

 

Now, for the moment I'm not getting into whether the Guide being offered really can show you "How To Make £600,000 ($900,000) a year  Easy from Tiny Press-Ads", but what intrigues me is this question: "Is the advertiser making any money from doing this?"

So after years of just passing the advertisements by without much further thought, I started to investigate a little more deeply. And what I found astonished me!

And what I found astonished me!

Some of these Ads were making millions!

I couldn't believe it at first. Until I met one of the advertisers in person and he showed me his Lloyds TSB Bank Statements. He was making sums like £33,933.84, £84,010.29 and even £136,023.53 a month!

In just a few years he went from being a 'normal' guy with a job he hated to being a multi-millionaire.

This is one of his Ads on the left. This has run in UK Sunday and Weekly newspapers for years. Unobtrusive. But quietly making the gentleman in question an absolute fortune. And it all starts with an Ad like that.

At current interest rates you are paying the government for the privilege of saving. The real return on your money after allowing for tax and inflation?

Less than 1%!

Let's say you're earning £30,000 a year and you want to retire on the same income. How much do you need to save?

If your fund is invested when you retire and you’re lucky enough to get say, 6% a year return, you'll have to somehow save a cool  half a million! That's at today's prices. Even if inflation averages no more than 2.5% a year, then in 25 years you'll need well over a million!

Don't Risk Your Money

That's right. The big, big secret that will make or break you in Direct Response Marketing is that you test small and roll out big. Remember that.

That way you don't risk your hard earned cash or life's savings on an uncertain project.

This is not a get-rich-quick scheme, but a solid business venture. To succeed, you need patience. The biggest mistake many people make is to write their first tiny advert and place it in about a dozen different publications. They sit back and wait for the enquiries or (if they’ve really got it wrong) for the orders to roll in.

So, what’s wrong with doing that? First, instead of having to invest about fifty pounds, their investment will be around twelve hundred pounds. Immediately, they are risking more of their money. But, the biggest mistake is this…

Their advert has not been tested.

To make the maximum money with minimum risk ALWAYS use the following format…

Create a tiny advert and run it in ONE publication.

The Headline

80% of the success of your Ad will be determined by the headline. And it will be all over in 1.2 seconds!

If people don't read the headline and then follow on to read the rest of your Ad, you have completely wasted your valuable time and money.

Decades ago John Caples made history with his now-well-known print ad. "They laughed when I sat down at the piano, but when I started to play..."

This is what he said about headlines in a rare interview:-

"What I’m saying is . . . . . . and that one main appeal must appear in your headline.

After the main appeal, your headline is the next most important thing to test. Most people when surfing the Net pay scant attention to anything other than the headline when deciding whether they’re interested or not.

Your entire success rests on the strength of your headline...

...Did you know David Ogilvy wrote 103 headlines and shopped them around the office for reactions before coming up with, "At 60 miles an hour, the loudest sound in the new Rolls Royce comes from the electric clock"?

Once you’ve identified the right appeal, I challenge you to write at least 25 headlines around it, and then put them away for a day....

... a great headline has to instantly appeal to the prospect’s self-interest, that’s job one. It’s got to promise to give him something he wants, and wants badly.

Secondly, it can be greatly strengthened by adding ...

Third, it should have..."

Well, I could go on.... There are whole books and courses about writing headlines. I've got many of them. The point I'm trying to make is that you must learn how to write good headlines - or where to get good headlines written for you.

Sale-Snatching Sales Copy

There's no point in having a great attention-grabbing headline that gets your reader all fired up and excited to read what it's all about if the follow-on sales copy is flat and

o r i n g.

The Sales Copy has a single thing to do. And that is to Sell.

Nothing else. Just to sell the product.

It doesn't have be good literature, it doesn't have to be great grammar. It just has to sell.

And the better it sells the more you make.

Before I go any further let me assure you that writing a sales letter is easy – when you know how to do it. You do NOT have to write an essay. You do NOT have to be good at English (although it should be your first language, ideally).

Quite simply, if you can tap out an email or write a letter to a friend or talk naturally then you will be able to easily write a powerful sales letter that will earn you ‘real’ money! (Or, you can get others to do it for you, or use software, as I explained in the headline section.)

I will explain exactly how the millionaires write their sales letters, and what they do to get the best results and the highest income from their efforts -  so you can do the same. And most of the top-guns in this business did not have any training whatsoever in English or writing.

Having A High Quality And Unique Product

You must have a first-class product to offer. Preferably it should be unique by which I mean you are the only supplier or at least it should be somehow different to what other people are selling.

By different I mean it should differentiate itself from other products. But it really must be top-notch and of immense value to the customer.

Let me tell you why and this is not so obvious as you may think.

In case you're thinking "Obviously, if it isn't first-class' nobody will buy it"…

… you’d be Wrong!

Because a really, really hot sales letter can sell anything! Here I'm talking primarily about information products, manuals, DVDs, courses, books and so on. When sold by Direct Response Marketing, the purchaser can't see the actual product before buying. So the whole buying decision is based on the sales letter. OK?

So what if there is a great sales letter that pulls in the sales but the product isn't really all it was made out to be? Why should that matter?

Again, you may be thinking "Obviously, if it's rubbish everybody will send it back for a refund".

Wrong again!

Yes, some people will send it back, but not everyone. Here's why:-

People are too busy! Yes they mean to send it back. And they keep thinking to themselves "I really must send that package back" but never get around to it.

Also people are too lazy. Look, to send a package back, you have to re-pack it. Wrap it up. Write the address on it. Take it to the post office. Pay for the stamps. And wait hopefully that your refund will arrive. And if it does and it's a cheque you then have to take it to the bank to pay it in!

It's just too much for some people.

The real reason why your product must be first class

Here is the real reason why your product must be first class: Because you want to sell other products to your customers. (Back-End sales, as I explained before) And if the first product was junk they won’t buy from you ever again.

How to Choose What to Sell by Direct Response Marketing

There are so many propositions that could be developed into profitable direct-mail enterprises that are either overlooked or being half heartedly offered. There should be an element that’s unusual about your product or service, something that’s fresh and new, that nobody else out there is doing.

In general, direct-response propositions fall into these types:

1. The sale of Merchandise.

2. The sale of “Information”. (I love this one)

3. The sale of Personal Services.

Before I cover details for each of these areas, let me give you an overall view…

If you’re contemplating starting a direct-response business, the first thing you have to decide is what you’re going to sell. There are two parts to this…

What is the general category?

Then specifically – what is your market place?

For example, do you want to sell home-made sweets; your own greenhouse-raised plants; a great money-making scheme; a small useful “novelty” item; racing tips; or what?

Try and ask yourself a few questions about what you intend to sell.

Is it exclusive or can anyone get the same thing easily from elsewhere?

· Is it really appealing, can you point out what makes it something the customer’s just got to have?

· Does it have a sufficient mark-up?

Study Other Marketers

You can learn a great deal by studying actual press ads in newspapers and magazines that interest you. In fact, you can easily and quickly see what’s hot, what’s selling and what’s not.

If a particular Ad is in time after time, you can be sure it’s a winner. Find out what they're selling and see if you can find something similar. (Not the same - similar) For example:

The Ad shown on the left has been running in The Mail On Sunday, The Independent On Sunday and the Sunday Mirror every week since 30 March to 20 April 2008. It may still be running. The product is for 1 DVD and 3 CDs, Cost £69.95. Do you think Chris (the promoter) is making money from this? Of course  he is. Can you find something similar and sell it too? Of course you can.
